VEGAS MYTHS BUSTED: The Las Vegas Strip’s Official Boundaries

Most people cognize where the Las Vegas Strip officially starts and ends. It runs from just now due south of Henry Russell Road, where the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” (WTFLV) stands, northward to the STRAT.

Except that it doesn’t.

There is no more functionary definition of where, or still what, the Las Vegas Strip is. There are only when theories. That’s because it’s non an officially designated place, but only a cognomen for a subjective section of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Depending on whom you ask, the Las Vegas Strip does or does non include the 0.2 miles of the urban center of Las Vegas that Las Vegas Boulevard runs through from Sahara Desert Avenue to the STRAT.

Barricade Disputes

The STRAT will evidence you that it 100% does, as will most travel guides, newspapers, and websites that desire to sell publicizing to the STRAT.

The city of Las Vegas also agrees. In 2020, it installed the Gateway Arches over Las Vegas Boulevard compensate next to the STRAT to foretell where the urban center begins, even though the cstartedegan at Sahara Desert Avenue, its southmost boundary.

History buffs, however, will evidence you that the Las Vegas Strip ends at Sahara Desert Avenue because it can never intersection with the city because of how the Strip came to be.

In 1950, a aggroup of cassino resort owners founded the unincorporated Charles Joseph Clark County township of Enterprise. Their motive was to avoid paying taxes and fees to the city piece still capitalizing on its figure past claiming Las Vegas as their speech — a scam that continues to this day.

A yr later, the smaller township of Winchester, Nev., which Las Vegas Boulevard passes through and through from the Wynn to the Sahara, followed suit of clothes for the same reason.

The earliest known extension to Highway 91 as “The Strip” appeared inwards a Mar 1947 paper advertisement for a young cassino hotel called the Big Hat. “Direct from Ciro’s and Lindy’s,” it described the musical theater human action the Alperi Trio, “Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip to Las Vegas’ Strip.” (Lindy’s Steakhouse was torn mastered long ago, Ciro’s became the Comedy Store in 1972.)

According to the widow woman of former L.A. cop Guy McAfee, her belatedly husband had been using the nickname  “The Strip” since shortly after he purchased the tiny Pair-O-Dice gambling casino on the deserted road in 1939. It was a purely sarcastic equivalence to the bustling Sunset Strip he left behind.

This story may be apocryphal, however, since on that point is no record book of it until after McAfee’s January 1960 death. Regardless, 20 years later, one time Interstate 15 was under construction, Highway 91 was decommissioned and renamed Las Vegas Boulevard to reverberate its functional modulation to a local road, and the Las Vegas Strip became vernacular parlance.

Sign of the Times

Also inward 1959, the WTFLV sign on made its debut on Las Vegas Boulevard. Designed past commercial message creative person Betty Willis, it was installed just now N of the lapidate pillars of the old McCarran Field past her employer, the horse opera Neon Sign Company.

Interestingly, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal story published on Feb. 6, 1959, horse opera Neon won its $4K call by pitching the sign’s verbiage as “Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip.” That would get made the mark to a greater extent precise since the urban center of Las Vegas was 4.2 miles north.

However, the story noted that “after some consideration, the commissioners decided they would sort of feature the contract read, ‘Welcome to Las Vegas.'”

No ground was cited, and the outcome confuses visitors to this day.

South of the Current Border

The location for the WTFLV sign, and the unofficial go of the Strip, was chosen because it happened to follow the southmost cutoff for gambling casino resort hotel developing at the time. Nearly everything beyond that was relieve untouched desert.

In theory, though, the ratify could, and ease can, be moved S at any clip to reach out the Strip to include its futurity development. In a decennary or two, the signalise could very advantageously regain itself quadruplet more miles due south of the city, and perhaps ternion miles further south at some dot after that.

By 2026, the Oak View Group plans to unresolved a $3 billion, NBA-ready arena, 2K-room cassino resort, and amusement territorial dominion on 25 acres inward the current sticks, where the I-15 intersects with Blue Diamond Road.

Last year, a former executive director with MGM Resorts International, Alan Feldman told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the Strip could conceivably triple inward size single day, extending S to the M Resort at Las Vegas Boulevard South and St. Rose Parkway.

The Strip already started its southward migration when Allegiant Stadium bust run aground in 2017. When the $1.9 billion, 65K-seat home of the Raiders opened behind Mandalay Bay terzetto years later, it instantly transformed what had been the Strip’s southern steer into its brand-new sports hub.

And hubs don’t same existing on the fringes of anything.
